I finally decided that it was time to buy a tractor and stop talkin about it. Ie= I got the bosses permission. LOL. I have a 90 x 130 lot, about 1/4 acre minus a ranch house, garage and a fair amount of landscapeing. I have been spending about an hour and 1/2 moweing with a push mower. Last year we purchased a recreation property about four hours north of home and I bought a BCS walk behind tiller. I tilled 1/2 acre last year but it took quite awhile. I plan on tilling 1.5-2 acres in total but about 1/2 of that wont need to be tilled regularly. I do plan on tilling 1 acre twice a year. I decided on the X485 because I wanted the liquid cooling and EFI. I would like to go with the diesel but at another 150# I'm already concerned about an oversize mower and I dont want to damage my lawn. I am still capitulating about the AWS version, I do think it would help on my small lawn but it adds another $800 and alot of nuts and bolts. I'm also concerned about the AWS in the woods. I Intend to get the 48" deck with rear bagger and blower, 50" tiller and 54"front blade. No more walk behind tiller, no more snow blower and especially no more push mower ! JD came out with the pre-season special of 0 down, 0 interest and 0 payments for six months then 6.95% for the life of the loan on revolving credit. TWO more days untill I place my order, I'll be counting green and yellow sheep.

When it comes to purchasing a premium garden tractor or compact utility tractor I believe you should get the tractor you want now and not worry so much about the price. That may sound a little strange but I think you need to look at the purchase price as a 20 year investment. A properly cared for JD X485 or 495 will last you 20 years with a good chance of only needing minor repairs. The engines in either the gas or diesel can easily go that long. The diesel (X495) will cost you another $1000 but you will get most of that back in fuel saving over the life of the tractor. I know a $1000 is real money but when compared with what everything else costs I believe it is a good investment in a tractor that can last you 20 years. With the good terms JD has now the extra $1000 will not make that much difference, maybe $20.00 a month. Again, fuel savings will probably make up half of that. I have an X595 that I think is great tractor, except the horrendous appearance from the front of the tractor. The design team did a nice job on appearnce from the side and especially from the rear. But from the front? Based upon my experience (100 hours) the X tractors seem to be performing well. My dealer also tells me that have had only minor problems. ....

The Diesel is very nice and the cost is not the issue. The total $ cost difference per year is nominal and I think my dealer was $800 more for the 595. My real concern is weight. As much as I will enjoy useing the tractor on my recreational land the most frequent use will be moweing the lawn. My lot is 90 x 130 or 11,700 sq' minus 3900 sq' for house, garage and deck and minus roughly another 800 sq' for sidewalks and landscapeing. That leaves me with +- 7,000 sq' of lawn. This was takeing me 1 to 1.5 hours to mow with a push mower. The size of the lawn is also my reason for going with the smallest deck. The Diesel is also not available in the AWS version. I would like the 4wd version but after considering the tire width and overall weight that would probably not be very productive on my lawn. I havent ruled out the aws yet and again my concern is a larger tractor on a smaller lawn service so turning radius is a issue, but then again I can do alot of backing up for $800.00. The X495 weighs an additional 150# 2ws Vs. 2ws. That is my real concern as my back yard has a light slope on one side that gets progressively steeper on the other and is fairly wet in the spring. I gotta say I really like the X495 weather or not I need the Diesel, I guess I just watched Tool Time waaay too much. ....

After reviewing my bid sheets I did notice that the X495 is $1,100 more that the X485 2WS. The 4WD (595) is another $1,100. ....

I don't think the weight will be an issue for you. I traded my 2WD 445 (gas) for the X595 (4WD diesel) and can't tell any difference on the lawn. ....

You can Get a X495 with AWS now. Now at your other property if you ever plan on doing loader work you cannot use a loader on the AWS model. ....

Sergeant, I'm not sure I understand your post but a loader is a non issue for me. I would never consider the X series if a loader was a priority as the cost does not equate with what it can handle. I also will not be buying two tractors that really is my dilema with this unit being a little large for my lawn. Both AWS 2WS and 4wd are currently available. ....

Don't worry about reliability and AWS. They have proven to be bulletproof. As for the question if you need it or not, go for a test drive and pretend like you are mowing your yard, if you have a lot of maneuvering to do, the AWS will sell itself. ....
